Columbia’s cliffhangers tend to be campy or comic by serial standards, but this early misfortune (1939) is a very appetizing adventure. The personable Warren Hull is expedient in the title role. Movie buffs will search for many of the cast members from Columbia’s “B” pictures and Three Stooges movies. Slick production and genuine direction by Sam Nelson and Norman Deming (who were usually assistant directors) push this one head and shoulders above the general bustle of Columbia serials. (Observe for a beautifully staged wrap-up in the last chapter, when the masked villain finally gets his!) A notice about this video edition: the soundtrack of Chapter 1 was damaged, so the video producers hired actors and technicians to fallacious a unique synchronized soundtrack. The repair job is rather distracting (the suave, pencil-mustached Kenneth MacDonald suddenly has a twangy Texas tenor), but it only lasts a few minutes; the rest of the serial is fully intact and the source print is in top shape. Report and sound are well-behaved. The 2-DVD location also includes a selection of trailers from Mascot, Republic, and Universal serials. Highly typical of Saturday-matinee adventures, and a resplendent choice for first-time serial viewers or for fans who’ve never seen this long-unavailable film. (Let’s hope VCI or Columbia will release the even better “Spider’s Web” serial to home video.)
Okay, I’m going to open this review by admitting that I never liked dauntless magicians in savor suits, top hats, and tails. Even Zatanna, who had stout legs, grated on me. So MANDRAKE THE MAGICIAN began with a strike against it. On the other hand, it has Warren Hull, who was so proper in THE SPIDER’S WEB (and comely gracious in THE GREEN HORNET STRIKES AGAIN, too) . And of course Mandrake himself was created by Lee “The Phantom” Falk, so that’s a third hand. And if you deem that’s impossible, well, he IS a magician.

A mysterious arch-criminal known as “The Wasp” (he actually wears a rather effeminate silk shroud and cape, not a fierce-looking wasp get-up, unfortunately) is after a novel invention that can… well, it can do something resplendent poor, I’ll bet. Into the fray stumbles Mandrake, who, with his faithful giant African manservant Lothar, foils the various machinations of Mr. Silky Drawers. Only Lothar is, not a muscular ebon giant, but instead a rather doughy guy who looks like a Philippino and dresses like an extra in a Sinbad report.
I liked the first couple of chapters; Mandrake does a magic trick or two, and occasionally tosses those nifty petite smoke capsules and then sprints out of the room, leaving the villains wondering how the heck he did that. It gets tedious, however, and ravishing soon even Mandrake loses interest, tossing the capsules and then unbiased standing there, waiting for the smoke to positive and the fisticuffs to continue. Not long into the serial, the magic angle is completely forgotten, the eveningwear goes in the closet, and for all intents and purposes Mandrake turns into Dick Tracy.

Ultimately, the darn thing is disappointing. A Mandrake serial should have done more with the mystical aspect of the character, even if only having its hero pull bunnies out of his hat to throw at the villains. It runs out of steam midway through, and – although at 12 chapters, it’s the shortest of the 57 Columbia chapterplays – becomes rather listless in the second half. Co-directors Sam Nelson and Norman Deming did one more serial together (OVERLAND WITH KIT CARSON) and then Columbia dumped them and handed over the serial reins to James W. Horne, who directed the next ten Columbia serials all by his lonesome.
VCI’s DVD is genuine, not enormous. Some of the soundtrack of chapter one has decayed over the years, and voices were overdubbed for the DVD release, but if you cared about stuff like that, you wouldn’t have read this far into the review anyway. Bonuses include a poster gallery, biographies, and serial trailers.

Talk about perverting FDR’s fireside chats. This work is mostly about how Chavez uses his “Alo Presidente!” to wield absolute power.
This work had many surprising facts in it. It said that by admitting defeat in a coup is how Chavez gained power. The work says Cuba needs Venezuela, not the other design around. Many Americans loved W’s “folksiness” and recently Jindal tried to imitate it to no success. Here you glimpse Chavez singing and they call some of his acts “buffoonish.”

This work does explain how absolute power corrupts absolutely. Chavez may throw around the term “equality,” but he really wants to be the head of his nation forever, honest like Mugabe does. Unruffled, the people have voted down many of his measures, so they may be savvy voters despite their poverty.
One thing stood out to me: his program seemed to be a method to blame those in his cabinet for his blunders. It is a plot for others to purchase the heat. This reminded me of the inconsistency of Amin shown in “The Last King of Scotland.” Level-headed, when Chavez closed a favorite TV dwelling, the people were upset because they couldn’t spy their well-liked soap operas, politics were not the sing for them. It’s appealing how Chavez has mastered some of Machiavelli’s principles but also failed at many of them.
Still this work left some things out for me. Grand is made of Bolivia’s Evo Morales being indigenous. However, Chavez looks VERY indigenous to me. He is one of the few Latin American leaders who is clearly not of European phenotype, yet his certain ethnic background is never brought up here. The work states that Venezuela needs the US to transform its coarse oil into something more sophisticated. However, I content I heard that Chavez once gave oil to bus companies that transport bad Americans to work. So I score the sense that Chavez has power in the US that this documentary ignores. Also, if left glide politics are so unpleasant, then why are they being embraced more and more in South America? Why is it a winning sign there? I’m impartial not willing to throw Chavez and his fearlessness in front of Uncle Sam objective yet, even as this work portrays him as a complete victim. Please also effect that almost all of the interviewees here were male; this does execute me wonder if politics is highly gendered in that nation.
A ninety itsy-bitsy informative glimpse at Hugo Chavez.

I’ve seen a couple of interviews with Chavez. Depending on you who ask you may gain different answers. Frontline did a incandescent thing by basically have Chavez screech for himself through footage after another through Alo Presidente reveal. You obtain people talking about Chavez as well but having Chavez basically converse and act for himself adds crediblity which leaves very debate about the type of person he is.
After watching this you can only enact that the man is one paranoid, sinful dictator. He abuses his power by shutting down ratio stations, attacks any critic unmercifully, fails to follow through on his promises to his people and on and on.
The episode documents this dazzling well.
What fascinated me about Chavez is how he is so powerful like the disgraced, pitiful venerable President George W. Bush.
Chavez passes himself as a liberal to appeal to the Venezuelan people. This is how he got elected. However, many of his “liberal” policies don’t seem to approach their goal. When you learn the reasons unhurried, you don’t mediate this guy is a liberal at all. For instance they talk about a cooperative program made to beget more job for textile powers, yet many of the workers fabricate about a hundred dollars, not enough to live on.
Chavez’s power which is well documented here is Chavez’s ability to control the oil wealth in Venezuelan. He uses heavy handed and illegal tactics to gain that fair.
Is that wealth distributed encourage to the people of Venezuela? The reply so far is no. The program doesn’t seem to mention one success Chavez has had. We even peek him belittle guests and reporters on his Alo Presidente exhibit when these failures or perceptions of failure are even mentioned.
Next in the episode, Chavez seeks to change the constitution for himself.
Chavez as stated makes himself to notice like a liberal, but the results so far don’t point his administration as anything but liberal. As I said, he and Bush seem eerily similar. It’s a riot that the two had a feud.
One thing this episode does not go into detail at all is the failed coup against Chavez sponsored as always by CIA.
They had plenty of time to document it here but it’s merely mentioned.
Despite this, this is a very informative episode giving you a spacious recount of Hugh Chavez.

If for you the considerable things about the galapagos include the iguanas, tortoises, and finches, you will be disappointed in this program. After a cursory recognize at the earth- and air-borne species, the camera goes underwater and examines fish. The imagery is resplendent, but we are NOT seeing those creatures which have made the galapagos celebrated! A fairer title would have been “OCEAN ENVIRONMENTS AROUND THE GALAPAGOS Space.”
No quibbles with the glory of the presented creatures, but we had been expecting considerable more about what makes these islands modern!
I agree with the other reviewers that this should be entitled ‘Underwater life around the Galapagos’. The movie spends far too powerful time underwater instead of focusing on the dazzling scenery and wildlife on land. Why can’t the IMAX producers simply let the aesthetic images of wildlife thunder for themselves instead of dreaming up a tacky storyline about a fine marine biologist and her oh so perilous explorations? At one point she rappels down into a cave and worries about the possibility that the rocks above her will collapse. I was in the Galapagos last month and visited the same cave (on the island of Santa Cruz) – what they don’t content you is that there are stairs into the cave from the other destroy! The naturalist guides we spoke with in the Galapagos regard the IMAX movie as a joke, all the sadder because members of the IMAX team died making the film.

The first thing that surprised me about this flick is that it is in dismal and white. Obviously, I could have read that from the product description, but I unbiased sort of passed over it and seeing that lustrous color camouflage I was expecting something different. Not that this is anyway a terrible thing. There is something unexpected about a sexual and violent sunless and white film that makes them all the more handsome, fair because I am not old to seeing such extremes in the classic format.

“Female Demon Ohyaku” (“Yôen dokufuden hannya no ohyaku”) is fair a incredible flick. The first Pinky Violence film, and the one that would inspire many other rape/revenge flicks like Lady Snowblood and End Bill it has all the classic elements. Ohyaku Dayu (Miyazono Junko) is a fine acrobat/prostitute who is sold to the highest bidder following each demonstrate. Capturing the recognize of a pleasing thief, he rescues her from a bureaucratic rapist and claims her for his acquire. She is unprejudiced the dreadful girl a guy like him needs as partner and wife. Ah, but a gratified life was not meant for Ohyaku, and she soon finds her self without a lover, disgraced and exiled on a prison island. There is only one thing for a desperate gal in that dwelling….revenge.
Now, being an older flick “Female Demon Ohyaku” is not as gross as some of the later Pinky Violence offerings. There is no accurate nudity to shriek of, and the gore is small. But they manufacture do with what they have, as Ohyaku seduces and kills her method through a number of hapless men, and even one woman (very sexy scene!), working her blueprint towards her target. Lead actress Miyazono Junko is quite the beauty, although believable tough and deadly as well. She doesn’t let anyone pick the easy blueprint out in her revenge, but gets creative with her cruelty. Wakayama Tomisaburo, of Lone Wolf and Cub fame, plays a supporting role but never really gets into the action.

The DVD has some spacious features as well, including an essay on the Sword and Girl genre, and a nice commentary. The conceal is reversible so you can have the modern Japanese artwork instead of the shown shroud, which is really wintry. This is followed by two other loosely-connected color films in the series Legends of the Poisonous Seductress #2: Quickly Method Okatsu. and Legends of the Poisonous Seductress #3: Okatsu the Fugitive. They don’t continue the account, but feature the same lead actress and themes. I am anxious to grasp them up, and observe if they are as heavenly as this gem.
Usually, I see movies a month or two after I receive them, because I don’t have the time. I enjoyed watching this first series of Oyaku. The fragment I didn’t devour was having the disk stopping on me after a few minutes in the movie and I had to support trying to rep past the fragment it would terminate on.
